EN-Chart was originally developed in response to several requests from emergency department (ED) managers who needed help in trying to meet the new demands for coding and charge capture. With the implementation of Ambulatory Payment Classifi cations (APCs) in 2000, hospitals needed to be able to apply complex rules to generate optimal revenue. I took on that challenge and developed a strategy to marry paper with technology through the use of Optimal Mark Recognition, technology that had never been used in the ED.

Over the years our product has matured to not only meet the needs of the ED but has now expanded into meeting the needs of coders in the Health Information Management (HIM) Department. Our software provides the intellect to apply the CPT coding rules to ED patient visits. We not only calculate the Evaluation and Management (E/M) level using an objective scoring tool but now apply the complex Drug Administration rules which have plagued all emergency departments this year.

Our state-of-the-art automated software continues to provide a solution that provides accurate and effi cient coding for the Emergency Department and Health Information Management Department.
